Spring 2014 Update

April is here and we’re starting to see a trickle of folks returning to Ann Lake. And boy, are they surprised. There is still ice on the lake!

The Almira Township Planning Commission passed a new ordinance which affects most residents on Ann Lake. In summary:

  • No person shall ignite, discharge, or use consumer fireworks within Almira Township between the hours of 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. on the day preceding, the day of, and the day after a national holiday.
  • No person shall ignite, discharge, or use consumer fireworks within Almira Township on any day that is not the day preceding, the day of, or the day after a national holiday.

Addendum – May 28th

In cooperation with the Benzie Conservation District, the roads along the south side of Ann Lake were scouted for Garlic Mustard. While there were two sightings of Garlic Mustard, one along Birch View Trail and the other at the end of Pleasant View Road, the more disturbing finding was of Japanese Knotweed. This is a plant we definitely do not want near the lake or wetlands. It is difficult to deal with and spreads via rhizomes. The Invasive Species Committee will work with the owner of the lot to eradicate this plant.
